Home Automation Ted Device/AMI
Each appliance, including the pool, hot tub and HVAC, are being monitored. The system being used is the TED Monitoring system.
MySource Integration In-Home Display
MySource is an open architecture system developed to allow integration with all data gathered at the end user level. This data is accessible and displayed to the end user and the utility for purposes that are useful to the specific user and organization.
Blower Door and Infrared Camera
A blower door and infrared camera were utilized to identify areas deficient in insulation and weatherization.
 HVAC Upgrade Dual Fuel System The existing gas furnace and Central A/C with efficiency ratings _____ were changed to a dual fuel application with the following efficiencies:
__ % efficient gas furnace
__% air source heat pump
Heat Pump Water Heater
The gas water heater was changed out to a heat pump water heater of ___% efficiency rating.
Energy Star Appliances
The following appliances were changed to Energy Star appliances:
Clothes washer and dryer
Dish washer
Compact Fluorescent Bulbs All lighting was converted to CFLs
Wet Blown Cellulose Insulation Wet blown cellulose insulation was used in wall cavities that were identified as minimal to no insulation with the infrared camera. Wet blown cellulose insulation was also used throughout the ceiling to improve ceiling insulation to R-38.
Home Weatherization All windows and doors were re-sealed with new caulking and weather stripping.

Critical Challenges

Emerging from smart grid programs is that of in-home displays.  In some aspects, this technology has been around for many years, but in other aspects it is new in how it aligns with utility measures and programs.    An example is how IHD can be maximized by AMI or vice versa?  This case study will evaluate the challenges of integrating IHD with AMI and also how the two can achieve expanded value to the consumer and utility, therefore, leading to increased value.

Cost Benefit Analysis
Cost benefit analysis for IHD will have varying results based on many dynamics. In addition, the value may be tangible in some cases and intangible in others. This case study will evaluate the following dynamics and characteristics to determine the overall ROI in IHD programs and systems.

  • Equipment, installation and ongoing maintenance costs
  • Needed pricing signals
  • Consumer demographics
  • Load characteristics and use patterns
  • Demand and energy savings
  • Consumer satisfaction/loyalty

Consumer Behavior

The primary benefit to the consumer will be that of lowering the energy bill. How the consumer interacts and utilizes an IHD will be imperative to the success of such a program. Understanding what drives consumers to monitor their use and respond to pricing signals beyond pricing will be evaluated within this case study. It has been noted by a CRN report that IHDs that have clever “feedback” design will keep the consumer coming back.

HBA 1.0 Entire Home Application

Case Study HBA 1.0: Entire Home Application is primarily focused on home automation/in-home displays. As outlined within the case study, a number of measures have been taken to ensure that the analysis properly addresses areas that will ultimately impact the overall evaluation of the IHD. The intent of this case study is to utilize factual data to determine the rationale and implications to both the consumer and utility in using IHDs for the purpose of demand response and customer satisfaction.

Case Study Objectives
♦  Evaluate the challenges and effectiveness of IHDs related to demand response programs and incentives.
♦ Determine the utility automation system integration requirements.
♦  Create greater understanding of how providing energy information to the member changes or modifies energy use behaviors.
♦  Determine the tangible and intangible benefits to both the consumer and utility (return on investment).
♦  Determine what information is most valuable to the consumer.
♦ Determine the requirements of the consumer and utility in providing installation and effective use of an energy display system.
