Smart Grid Minimize
Real-Time Use and Monitoring
Real time use monitoring allows the utility to establish what is known as time of use (TOU) pricing rate structures that distinguishes rates for different hours of the day or for different seasons of the year. This also allows consumers alternative ways to reduce their energy bill by shifting their uses of electricity to less expensive times of the day.
Service Reliability Outage Notification
With the many electronic devices used in the home today, consumers' expectations for service reliability continue to increase. AMI provides the utility the ability to detect an outage and restore power in a timely manner while keeping customers informed. The benefits to the consumer are reduced outage minutes, which lead to increased satisfaction with service.
Connect and Disconnect
The two-way communications of AMI provides an effective and efficient way for the utility to remotely disconnect or reconnect a consumer's service. The benefits of this technology are reducing delinquents or bad debt, safety  and overall operational cost due to labor and travel time for field staff.
Net Metering
AMI enables the consumer to work with the local utility in implementing distributed generation applications. The net-metering application can be utilized to measure energy consumption of the home and excess energy that is being placed on the grid.

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) provides numerous opportunities for both the utility and the consumer with new, expanding business opportunities presented by near-real-time communication between central station, meters, and monitoring and control devices on the distribution system.  This technology provides a platform for close oversight and system operations along with new customer offerings that lead to significant efficiencies and energy management opportunities.
