Data Cleansing
Data cleansing, or normalizing a database, is one of the main functions of the MDM. Large amounts of data is being collected, stored and shared with many of the core business systems at the utility. When the MDM does data cleansing, the integrations will function better and reduce man hours spent on data entry.
Distribution Analysis
The utility can use all of the information entering the MDM from the various systems to analyze the distribution system. This can include line loss, demand response, critical load areas and power quality.

Dynamic Pricing
The MDM system gives the utility the option to provide dynamic pricing to its consumers. This includes time of use rates, critical peak pricing and real time pricing. This is accomplished through the MDM’s capacity to process and validate large volumes of interval data.

Analysis and Forecasting
Another function of the MDM system is providing information to other systems for analysis and forecasting. The data collected can flow into an engineering analysis system for demand and load forecasting. Power quality can also be monitored for system reliability.

Meter data management systems (MDM) act as a central repository for all metering data at the utility. Its main function is to normalize all of the interval data processing that comes from various business systems. Also the asset management of the meters can be accomplished in one system and reduce the errors and time associated with maintaining this information in the various integrated systems. Because of the ability to process this interval data efficiently, it enables complex billing features such as time of use pricing and demand response analysis.
